General Entry Requirements

You are normally expected to have successfully completed an honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject and have appropriate work experience. You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Additional Criteria

  • The standard entry requirement for the course is BSc(Hons) in Computer Science related subjects or BEng(Hons) in Software Engineering, usually with a first or upper second class classification. For applicants without a first or upper second, then a lower second degree will be considered on a case by case basis (particularly for candidates with good relevant industrial experience).

  • If English is not your first language you will need to complete a Secure English Language Test at IELTS 6.0 or equivalent with no band less than 5.5.

Aims of the Programme

The principal aims of the programme are to:

  • enable students with a background in software engineering or computer science to develop a deeper understanding of advanced software methodologies

  • ensure students have access and exposure to the latest methodologies and development techniques.

  • deepen understanding of approaches such as design patterns and their applicability to particular problems

  • stimulate creative thinking and enhance problem solving and decision making techniques

  • enhance essential skills such as group working, report writing and research skills

  • equip students with the knowledge necessary to understand the ethical and environmental issues they will encounter in industry in general.

  • develop sophisticated intellectual capabilities of research, critique, synthesis and innovation culminating in a masters level dissertation / project.

Programme Structure

The MSc Software Engineering programme comprises 7 modules at level HE7 including an optional 20 credit module. 180 credits is required for the award by successfully completing 6 modules at 20 credits each and the project at 60 credits.
